Frankenmuth Things to Do – What You Don’t Want to Miss
Heading to Frankenmuth and not sure what to put on your itinerary? We have got you covered!
Located in Michigan, Frankenmuth is a small town with big Bavarian influences.
And as someone with German heritage, I was immediately curious! So we packed up the kids and made the trip to Frankenmuth.
We had a fabulous time! With all the great family-friendly activities, there is definitely something for everyone.
Want to learn more? Let’s jump right in!
Is Frankenmuth Worth Visiting?
Yes! Frankenmuth is definitely worth visiting!
This quaint little town has a strong Bavarian influence and heritage, which is something you won’t find anywhere else in the US.
Not only that, but its annual Oktoberfest is definitely something you don’t want to miss… along with its world famous chicken dinners!
Frankenmuth is just an all-around great place to visit with family.
Best Things to Do in Frankenmuth
There are soooo many awesome attractions in this charming little town. So we have put together a list of the best (and our favourite) things to do in Frankenmuth, Michigan:
1. Get Lost in Bronner’s Christmas Wonderland
One of the biggest reasons Frankenmuth caught my eye was their GINORMOUS Christmas store!
In fact, Bronner’s Christmas Wonderland is the world’s largest Christmas store.
Spanning over 320,000 square feet (or the size of 1 and a half football fields), it offers an incredible selection of holiday decorations, ornaments, and gifts of all kinds.
You could practically spend an entire day in there!
But considering the size, the store was very organized!
There were clearly marked themed sections, so if you were looking for something in particular, it would not be too difficult to find it!
Season’s Eatings!
We were in Bronner’s for about 3 hours, and it felt like we had barely begun to scratch the surface of all that could be found there!
If you can believe it, we actually stopped for a snack of soft pretzels in the restaurant, because the kids needed a break from shopping!
Needless to say, we left with a huge haul of German-themed ornaments, as well as a small addition to my Christmas Village.
And don’t forget to take a look at the outdoor display with thousands of lights and Christmas scenes!
2. Take a Ride on The Bavarian Belle Riverboat
Taking a ride on the Bavarian Belle Riverboat is a great way to experience Frankenmuth from the water.
And during our tip, it was the perfect activity for a really hot day.
The one-hour narrated cruise gives the history of the Frankenmuth area.
The boat itself is an authentic and fully restored Stern Driven Paddlewheel riverboat.
The Bavarian Belle has an open-air canopied upper deck, as well as a fully enclosed lower salon.
We chose the upper deck, where the breeze off the water was wonderful!
This activity is perfect for families and provides plenty of opportunities for some awesome photography along the route.
3. Enjoy a Meal at Zehnder’s or Bavarian Inn Restaurant
Enjoying a meal at Zehnder’s or Bavarian Inn Restaurant is definitely a highlight of visiting Frankenmuth.
Both restaurants are famous for their family-style chicken dinners and offer a taste of traditional Bavarian cuisine.
We chose to dine at Zehnder’s. Established in 1856, it is known for its large dining rooms and classic American dishes alongside Bavarian specialties.
Just amazing! The meal is served family-style, meaning the platters are placed on the table for you to help yourself.
The feast is all-you-can-eat, and the servers were pretty attentive in regard to refilling plates.
Can you say “Winner Winner Chicken Dinner”!!
Both the meal and the service were awesome. We left feeling pretty full… and definitely content!
The Bavarian Inn, located across the street, provides a similar menu with a focus on German-inspired decor and ambiance.
Both restaurants offer children’s menus and are well-suited for family dining.
We would recommend making a reservation, as both places get extremely busy during peak times.
4. Go on a Gnome Hunt in Downtown Frankenmuth
If you are visiting Frankenmuth with younger children, be sure to take part in the Gnome hunt!
Head over to the Visitor’s Center where the staff will provide the kids with a map filled with clues.
The kiddos then need to go around town, find the gnomes, and write down their names (each gnome statue has a name) on the form provided.
Once they have found a minimum of 10 gnomes, they can head back to the Visitor’s Center to claim their small prize!
The gnomes were hidden in the local shops and restaurants, which meant parents could shop or browse, while the kids hunted down the gnomes.
Very clever, if you ask me!
5. Test Your Courage at the Frankenmuth Aerial Park
The Frankenmuth Aerial Park is an obstacle course high in the trees and perfect for a few hours of family fun.
With a combination of ladders, climbing elements, and zip lines, you work your way from platform to platform, completing each course element.
You then get to enjoy a short zip line to the next course.
Courses
The aerial park has a total of 6 courses, ranging in difficulty from beginner to expert.
As long as you are active and in good health, you should have no issues getting through the first few easy courses.
The more difficult courses, on the other hand, were really tough!
But since I am a stubborn and determined woman, I powered through, while Hubby and the kids cheered me on from the ground.
According to the website, a new course called the Franken Zip was recently added.
This course has 7 long zip lines at heights ranging from 15-35 feet off the ground. Sounds awesome!
Reservations
While Frankenmuth Aerial Park does not require prior reservations, we would definitely recommend making them.
This way, you will get to climb at a set time, and not have to wait for others who do have reservations. This is especially true if you have kids in tow.
Not only that but the park’s capacity is limited to the availability of harnesses and safety clips.
And speaking of kids, you have to be at least 7 years old to climb.
Our youngest son, Mr. Bump, was 7 at the time and was able to complete the first 3 courses.
For him, it was more the increasing height of the courses that held him back, rather than the actual level of difficulty.
Your reservation includes 2-3 hours of climbing, including a 15-minute training session.
You should arrive at least 10 minutes prior to your reservation, as you need to be fitted for your gear.
Wearing close-toed shoes is mandatory for climbs, and clothing should be comfortable to move and stretch in. Gloves and harnesses are provided.
6. Satisfy Your Sweet Tooth at SugarHigh Bakery
If you have a sweet tooth like I do, then I would recommend a visit to the SugarHigh Bakery.
Located in the River Place Shops, this award-winning bakery offers a wide variety of desserts, including cupcakes, cookies, and custom cakes.
SugarHigh Bakery was made famous when they won the Food Network’s “Cupcake Wars,” and more recently, competed in “Cake Wars.”
All hype aside, their cupcakes are GOOD! REALLY good!
And considering I had my own cupcake business for 13 years, and consider myself to be a cake snob, I wouldn’t recommend it if they weren’t tasty!
We bought a mixed pack, just so we could each get a small taste of different flavours. Not one disappointed us!
Aside from the awesome treats, they also had a small gift shop area where you purchase a few trinkets.
7. Explore the Frankenmuth Military and Space Heroes Museum
We stumbled on this little museum just as we were leaving the Aerial Park.
It’s quite small, but admission was free. Since Mr. Bump likes anything to do with airplanes, we took a few minutes to look around.
This is the only museum devoted to the wartime experience of one state’s people.
The museum also includes a section devoted to the Medal of Honor recipients.
According to the website, the collection includes more Medals of Honor than any other museum in the United States.
You really only need about half an hour to visit.
8. Shop for Unique Souvenirs at the Frankenmuth River Place Shops
If you love to shop, there are so many interesting stores in town, including the River Place Shops.
This outdoor shopping mall, made to resemble a Bavarian Village, is home to over 40 shops and attractions.
You can find everything from handmade crafts and local artwork to specialty foods, candy shops, and unique gifts.
The kids had a blast in the Ultimate Mirror Maze, which I think they must have gone through at least 3 times!
And while the Frankenmuth Cheese Haus is located on South Main Street and not in the River Place Shops, I would be remiss in not mentioning it.
If you love all things cheese, you just need to head over! Try the Chocolate Cheese, it was fabulous!
9. Take a Stroll Through the Holz-Brücke
One of my favourite places in Frankenmuth was an awesome covered wooden bridge that spans the Cass River.
I love bridges… almost as much as I love doorways… so the photographer in me went nuts!
The iconic Holz-Brücke can be found at the Bavarian Inn Lodge.
Although the bridge was only completed in 1980, both the Bavarian architecture and craftsmanship reflect how covered bridges were originally built.
10. Get the Perfect Photo for the ‘Gram at Grandpa Tiny’s Farm
Grandpa Tiny’s Farm in Frankenmuth offers a variety of fun and family-friendly activities.
You can explore the sunflower fields, visit the petting zoo with some pretty cute farm animals (Rosie the Donkey and Rammy the Ram take the cake!), and take photos with the rustic barns.
The farm also features flower gardens and seasonal events like Dinner in the Sunflowers.
It’s a great place for families to enjoy some time outdoors and capture the best photos for the ‘Gram!
11. Sample Some Local Craft Beer at the Frankenmuth Brewery
If you are looking to sample some local craft beer, or even just indulge in a really great burger, then head over to the Frankenmuth Brewery.
Established in 1862, it is actually one of Michigan’s oldest breweries.
Frankenmuth Brewery offers a variety of handcrafted beers, from classic lagers to seasonal ales.
You can take a tour to learn about the brewing process and the brewery’s history, then relax in the beer garden or the cozy tasting room.
The restaurant was great, with really nice views from their outdoor patio.
We all had burgers, with Hubby and I trying a couple of their craft beers as well.
The food and service were both excellent, so we would definitely recommend this Brewery.
12. Visit the Silent Night Chapel
The Silent Night Chapel in Frankenmuth is a replica of the original chapel in Oberndorf, Austria.
And if you are not sure of the significance of this chapel, it is where the Christmas carol “Silent Night” was first performed.
The chapel is open for viewing and is a great place to learn about the history of “Silent Night.”
13. Take Part in Oktoberfest
This annual event features all the traditional German food, music, and dance you would expect at an authentic Oktoberfest.
In fact, Frankenmuth was declared the first Oktoberfest in the US with the blessing of the original Oktoberfest in Munich!
The event even coincides with Munich’s!
Attending Oktoberfest in Frankenmuth is definitely on our bucket list!
Aside from all the bratwursts, pretzels, and beer, you will also find parades, entertainment, and activities for all ages.
And speaking of beer… Frankenmuth holds the honour of having the famous Hofbrauhaus brewery of Munich export its beer to the US to be served during Oktoberfest!
Prost!
14. Enjoy a Horse-Drawn Carriage Ride
A horse drawn carriage ride in Frankenmuth is a charming (or romantic) way to see the town.
These rides take you through the streets, providing a unique perspective on the area’s Bavarian architecture and wonderful river views.
Carriage rides are available year-round and can be a relaxing way to explore Frankenmuth’s attractions at a leisurely pace.
They are also a great way to see the town with kids when little legs are tired!
15. Cool Off at Zhender’s Splash Village Hotel and Water Park
Zehnder’s Splash Village Hotel and Water Park in Frankenmuth offers a fun and family-friendly getaway.
The hotel features an indoor water park with various attractions, including water slides, a lazy river, and a splash pad.
And you can enjoy the water park year-round, regardless of the weather. So it’s the perfect activity for a rainy (or chilly) day.
The hotel also provides comfortable accommodations, dining options, and activities for children.
You do not need to be a guest at the hotel in order to enjoy the waterpark. Tickets can be purchased at guest services.
16. Learn Something New at the Frankenmuth Historical Museum
The Frankenmuth Historical Museum offers visitors a chance to learn about the town’s unique history.
Located in downtown Frankenmuth, the museum features exhibits on the settlement’s founding by German immigrants in 1845, its development, and its cultural heritage.
Interactive displays, artifacts, and multimedia presentations provide an engaging way to explore the town’s past.
The museum also offers educational programs and special events throughout the year.
17. Go for a Peaceful Kayak on the Cass River
Kayaking on the Cass River in Frankenmuth is a popular activity for visitors.
It’s also a great activity for families with older children. Our kids absolutely love it!
You can easily rent kayaks from local outfitters like Frankenmuth Kayak Adventures.
While kayaking, you can see scenic views of the river, local wildlife, and landmarks like the Holz-Brücke covered bridge.
The calm waters make it suitable for both beginners and experienced kayakers.
It’s a great way to experience the Frankenmuth area from the water.
Where to Stay in Frankenmuth
During our visit to Frankenmuth, we stayed at The Drury Inn and Suites Frankenmuth. We love this chain of hotels!
Not only are the rooms well-appointed and family-friendly, but a full hot breakfast and complimentary receptions (including hot food and alcoholic beverages) are served daily.
The kids loved the pool and the popcorn machine in the lobby!
I thought it was awesome that the hotel actually looked like a Bavarian half-timbered house!
The hotel had free parking and was also conveniently located, just a short walk from the shops and attractions.
Of course, depending on your budget, Frankenmuth offers a wide variety of accommodations.
From hotels to small inns and private vacation rentals, you are sure to find the perfect place to stay during your visit to Frankenmuth.
